Conceding to Social Media
Apr 4th, 07 |About 18 months ago, before I ever got the idea for Design Adaptations, I started a blog called FeistyRed, which has turned into a medium for personal reflection rather than a topical niche blog, as I hope to make DA. Although I never did much with that site, it served as a fun little platform for jumping in to the blogosphere. I spent some time commenting on various blogs of interest, and posted occasionally on popular forums like Sitepoint, but the one thing I never bothered with was subscribing to any of the social media sites which have cropped up all over the net in the past year. I also never got any traffic. ;)
Not to say that’s the only reason for the lack of visitors, because honestly I was too busy learning and didn’t spend any time promoting my content. Since then however, I realized that by giving way to these user-driven sites, tremendous benefits can come about. I’m referring to networks like 9rules, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, reddit, flickr and so forth. There are many more of course, which I haven’t yet had time to look into. I realize I’m behind the curve a bit, but my responsibilities with home and family keep me on a short work leash.
I have yet to determine which of these networks will prove most beneficial for committing time to, but my guess so far is reddit, 9rules, and perhaps Technorati might offer the most returns as far as getting eyeballs. So begins an experiment of sorts. Already forming is a breadcrumb trail of my bookmarks, interests, blog posts, elsewhere comments and photostreams. Whether it pays off is yet to be seen.
