Design Notes - File Sharing Made Simple

Aug 3rd, 07 | 6 remarks

Randa became the unknowing source for this week’s Notes, when she recently wrote about being unplugged for a few days. It occurred to me that, in a sense, our entire lives are digital. We’re all plugged in, linked up and synced up. All our “stuff” has been digitized… music, photos, correspondence with friends and colleagues… even money.

Since we all need a place to store that stuff, this week’s feature is for anyone (not just designers) and box.net is where it’s at. Upload, store or share files of almost any type.

Access and edit your box files from anywhere… send a comp to a client, publish a photo to your blog, manage documents used on remote team projects, or keep everything private and just use box for storage! Are you on Facebook? Create “shares” with the box.net Files application.

I just signed up last night, so I don’t have much up there yet, but I totally dig this service already. It’s simple to use and has a fun interface. Drawback - it seems a little slow. Then again, it might’ve been that I was trying to upload too many large files at once, or was on at a really busy time.

Every once in a while, I come across a design that immediately inspires awe and makes me think “Wow, I’d kill to be that talented!” It’s a sickening feeling, actually - and yet motivating. Some of you may recognize this designer’s work right away… his name is Nick La, and he also operates N.Design Studio.

Web Designer Wall is about inspiration and imagination - and how! Although it’s a little on the busy side to suit my simple tastes, the illustrations are lovely and the scraps of paper and sticky notes really tie in with the name of the site. I think my favorite thing are the rollovers in the upper right corner. Very cool.

By the way this was brought to my attention by Vivien, of Inspiration Bit (in the thread of Randa’s Unplugged post). Thanks Vivien!

Thanks for the mention! I’ve been looking for exactly this kind of thing for sharing some files on one of my niche sites, so it’s very timely. People talk about how beneficial it is to unplug regularly, but the truth is, I like being plugged in. Technology is my friend. :)

Yep I’m with you. I love to travel but always in the back of my mind I’m thinking about what I’m missing online! LOL. Is that pathetic? Oh well if it is, then I am truly a geek because I don’t care.

You’re very welcome, Charity, and thanks to you for the credit. I love the colourful background with the illustrations on that Designer Wall. Although it does look busy, but the solid pale background of the main content makes the entire site very legible.

That’s a useful source you’ve shared with us today - file sharing. Thank you.

Add me to the pathetic crew. The thought of being unplugged sends me into a cold sweat and makes me a bit crazy really.

Nick La’s stuff is wonderful. The design he had up before this one was equally impressive.

I’m back. The design at Nick’s main site is what I was referring to - the colors are amazing. Oh to have such talent.

Oooh! I love the design for Web Designer Wall! The colors are beautiful together. And even though it is indeed busy, it totally works.
