The Pursuit of HAPPYness

Even a movie can change you. Whether it’s only for a few moments, or a lifetime. If you’ve ever seen a movie that changed the way you thought about something, or made you want to hug someone, or apologize, or call up an old friend… whatever, then you know what I mean. The Pursuit of Happyness was that kind of movie for me. I finally got to see it last night and bawled like a baby at the end.
Only a few movies have affected me in such a way. The first was Terms of Endearment. I think I was about 14 when it came out, and it definitely left an impression about how powerful love can be in the presence of hardship. Another one which stands out in my mind is The Passion of Christ. Whether you’re a believer or not, that movie leaves it’s mark on you as well, if for no other reason than witnessing the brutality one man endured in the name of faith.
The Pursuit of Happyness was the kind of movie which makes you grateful for the things you have, and feel like you have no business complaining about the things you don’t. It’s a demonstration of what hope and perseverance can bring us in life. Knowing it was based on a true story made it even better. When it was over I immediately went upstairs and woke my son to tell him what a good boy he was and how much I loved him. I suppose that’s the dramatic side of me winning out over cynicism. Anyway, spectacular movie. I’m watching it again right now. :)
